Judy Blank signs with Rounder Records Dinosaur single out now

February 03, 2025 by David Vousden in Americana, Indie, Roots

Netherlands-born but now Nashville-based Judy Blank has signed with the influential Rounder Records label. A new digital multi-track single 'Lil’ Mood' will be released on March 14th to coincide with an appearance at SXSW. In the meantime, check out the environmentally conscious ‘Dinosaurs’ for a taste of Blank’s eclectic sound, which, on this occasion, mixes a dreamy 1960s cool vibe with a 1980s synth soundscape. Blank will also be hitting the road in the USA, her native country, and even has a couple of shows pencilled in for the UK. Full details and the video for ‘Dinosaurs’ follow:

Esteemed roots/Americana label Rounder Records announces the signing of eclectic indie artist Judy Blank, and the release of her new single, “Dinosaurs.” The track will appear on the three-track multi-single Lil’ Mood, which is set for digital release on March 14th.

Born and raised in Utrecht, The Netherlands, Blank launched her recording career with her coming-of-age debut LP Morning Sun, which was recorded in Nashville and went on to win the 2023 Gold Award in her homeland. Her song ‘Tangled up in You’ from the album currently has over twelve million streams on Spotify. Blank has sold out numerous clubs in Europe as a headliner and has opened for artists like Langhorne Slim, The Wood Brothers and SUSTO. Blank now calls Nashville home since making the move in early 2024.

“Judy Blank represents everything we love about discovering extraordinary talent – she’s a true original who defies easy categorization,” says Rounder Records President, Stephanie Hudacek. “Her classic inspired melodies blend with contemporary indie sensibilities, while still maintaining the intimacy of a folk artist, speaking to the evolving sound of our modern space. Her magnetic presence and disarmingly honest songwriting transcend borders. We’re thrilled to welcome her to the Rounder family and help share her unique voice with audiences worldwide.”

With influences ranging from the sound of classic 1960’s girl groups to blue-eyed soul to edgy garage rock, Blank’s music strikes a balances between retro and modern stylings with the thoughtful lyricism of a singer/songwriter.

Her new song “Dinosaurs” is equal parts lighthearted and though-provoking. Informed by the current effects of climate change, Blank’s melodic arrangement and haunting yet playful vocals give way to a cheeky reckoning on the state of our environment. “I was obsessed with disaster movies as a kid,” says Blank. “Now I sometimes feel like I’m living in one. When I wrote this song, I thought of it as a postcard from the future. I hope it can be a low-key reminder that it’s time to change the ending.”

Squeeze - Trixies (Album Review)

While it’s hardly unusual for a songwriter, or songwriters in this case, to revisit songs that were semi-forgotten or seemingly doomed to live forever in a dusty notebook or on some long-since obsolete hard drive (Chris and Glenn strike me as very much old school ruled notebook types). I’m sure you never know when or how inspiration will strike, and there’ll be the odd gem ripe for rediscovery. With ‘Trixies’, Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook have taken this idea to its extreme, bringing a complete album - a concept album or rock opera, if you will - written while they were in their teens, back to life. The result is a record sure to please Squeeze fans old and new.

Paper Verses - Life Lines EP
Feb 16, 2026

These days, we seem to live our lives at high speed. In an ideal world, we’d all like to take the time to smell the roses, as the old saying goes. With this idea in mind, I ventured back, tentatively, into the murky depths of the Red Guitar Music inbox after a much-needed break (a break that would stretch to nearly a year, but that’s a whole other story). I found myself drawn to a small, unassuming (in a good way) release by a folk duo from Kent. Simone Lincoln and Matt Evans comprise Paper Verses, and ‘Life Lines’ is their debut EP.

The Speaker Wars (Album Review)

Life is full of surprises. At a time when the majority of people would be content to retire, potter about in the garden, and leave new music to the young folks, erstwhile Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch is back with a new band and an impressive new record. The other surprise is that the Italian Frontiers label, usually the home of all things AOR and melodic hard rock, continues a welcome expansion into other musical realms. The Speaker Wars and Frontiers seem like unlikely bedfellows, but the label is to be commended for landing this particular release. More please.

Jaywalkers - Move On

Jaywalkers first came to prominence via an appearance in the finals of the BBC Young Folk Awards in 2008. In the years since, the trio has built a solid following, effortlessly merging folk, country and bluegrass into their particular brand of English Americana via a combination of impressive musicianship, impeccable harmonies and a knack for identifying a good tune. Their latest album ‘Move On’, sensitively produced by Joe Rusby, is an impressive addition to their discography.

One of the positive aspects of running Red Guitar Music is that you encounter all manner of different musical genres that you wouldn’t necessarily find on your own. The RGM Inbox is positively overflowing with the good, the bad and, yes, the ugly (although something we find unlistenable is probably the best thing in the world to someone). One example that falls squarely in the good category of pleasant surprises is The Happy Couple, discovered on a recent visit to London’s Green Note, where the duo opened for Dimple Discs labelmate Kelsey Michael.

John Surge and The Haymakers - Maybe You Don't Know Me EP
Sep 18, 2024

To quote John Surge, “These five songs represent a real cross-section of the music we make”. John is referencing a new EP aptly titled, ‘Maybe You Don’t Know Me’. The ‘Almost Time’ album from last year was well received, but Surge still had a host of material that wasn’t quite right for that record but worked well in his live set. A live set that had gotten John noticed on the LA country scene in the first place. Surge re-connected with highly regarded Texas producer Tommy Detamore  {Doug Sahm, Jim Lauderdale, Sunny Sweeney, Jesse Daniel} and reenlisted many of the ‘Almost Time’ crew including his right-hand Haymaker guitarist Randy Volin, plus Brennen Leigh on harmony vocals, Brad Fordham (Dave Alvin/Hayes Carll) on bass, Tom Lewis (Junior Brown/Raul Malo) on drums and Floyd Domino (Asleep at the Wheel, Merle Haggard) on keyboards.
