The Baker's Dozen @ RGM
Laurie Mansworth has been at the helm of UK Melodic Rock/AOR act Airrace since they formed in 1982. The band recently released their excellent third album 'Untold Stories' and we caught up with Laurie for a chat about guitars, songwriting, early attempts at punk rock and Billy Bragg...
On the eve of the release of his latest album 'When We Were Animals' via Widemouth Records RGM caught up with Mishka Shubaly for another entry in the popular Baker's Dozen feature. The singer, songwriter, author and storyteller discussed his earliest musical memories, Mark Lanegan, Twisted Sister, his love of small venues with dodgy plumbing and much, much more. Mishka will kick off an extensive UK tour on June 9th in Derby that will see him playing throughout the UK with a London date at The Slaughtered Lamb on June 28th.
For the latest in The Baker's Dozen feature at RGM Nick Workman from British AOR/Melodic Rock act Vega is in the chair. The band will release their fifth album 'Only Human' on May 11th via Frontiers. The album was mixed and mastered by Harry Hess of Harem Scarem fame and you can catch the band live on their UK tour in June 2018. So please read on as Nick discusses Star Wars, True Detective and the mysterious Bootleg Snake:
For the latest in our Baker's Dozen feature, RGM caught up with Phil Poole vocalist for Doomsday Outlaw the UK bluesy hard rock act who'll be releasing their new album 'Hard Times' via Frontiers on May 11th. The band will also be supporting the release with their own shows and dates with Jizzy Pearl of Love/Hate fame. So please join us for Phil's thoughts on Elton John, Chris Cornell, 'The Devil Wears Prada' and his reason for being.
For the latest in The Baker's Dozen series, RGM caught up with Tino Troy of Praying Mantis. Tino and his brother Chris formed Praying Mantis back in 1974 and would become a prominent band in the NWOBHM movement (The new wave of British Heavy Metal) that sprang up in the late 70's alongside Iron Maiden, Saxon and Def Leppard. Praying Mantis differed from many of their contemporaries thanks to an obvious love of a good melody which added an almost AOR sheen to much of their material. In 2018 Mantis are about to release their latest album 'Gravity' via the Frontiers label. So join us as Tino Troy discusses his Greek heritage, an early love of reggae and the perils of playing music very loudly.
For the fifth instalment of The Baker's Dozen, we thought we'd see what a rock act might have to say for themselves so RGM caught up with Eamon Nancarrow vocalist for Irish rockers No Hot Ashes. Perseverance is always to be applauded and on March 23rd, 2018 NHA will release their debut album, 34 years after they first formed, via the Frontiers label.
For the fourth in The Baker's Dozen series, Gitta De Ridder kindly took time out from the promotion of her upcoming 'For Everything A Season' album, set for release on March 23rd, to chat to RGM about her influences, her love of British comedy, David Bowie in Labyrinth and much more:
Odadiah Jones and Orian Peled aka O&O are the third act to complete The Baker's Dozen. At the time of writing the duo were very busy preparing for C2C weekend at the O2 so we really appreciate them taking the time to get involved. So please read on for tales of rehearsals in a bomb shelter, Spanish music, John Denver and the mysteriously named Lynx 93.
For the second in our Baker's Dozen feature we are pleased to welcome all three members of The Goat Roper Rodeo Band who kindly gave up their time for a chat about all manner of things. So if you ever wondered how Scandinavian flat pack furniture might have played a part in the band's story then The Baker's Dozen is essential reading.
In search of our first participant for The Baker's Dozen, the good ship Red Guitar set sail from Plymouth on a bright clear day with hope in our hearts and a song on our lips. Before long we encountered a small boat, more like a raft really, that contained two amicable gentlemen Mr David Berkeley of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Mr Ben Parker of London, England. The duo seemed immensely glad to see us, and in exchange for some light provisions, willingly discussed their many adventures on The Son of Town Hall.
Ruston Kelly will release his debut album 'Dying Star' on September 7th via Rounder Records and to coincide the singer-songwriter has a show booked for London's Slaughtered Lamb on September 17th. This is obviously good news, but the very good news is Kelly will return to the UK in November for a run of shows with Cardiff, Ramsgate, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Islington Assembly Hall in London amongst the dates on a wide-ranging tour. The good news continues as fast-rising UK act The Wandering Hearts will join Kelly for the November/December dates. More about Ruston Kelly, 'Dying Star' and those tour dates follow:
Tom Baxter will release his new album 'The Other Side Of Blue' on August 17th, 2018 via The Orchard. Following the release of the album (which you can read about here), Tom will embark on an extensive UK/IRE tour in September that will include a London date at The Union Chapel on November 6th. A complete list of dates and Tom's latest single 'The Ballad of Davey Graham' follows:
After a very hectic 2017, things are looking equally busy in 2018 for Richard Thompson. The multi award-winning singer-songwriter-guitarist has announced an extensive UK tour for late 2018 dubbed the '13 Rivers Tour' which could well be a nod to his new album set for release later this year via the Proper Records label, or possibly he's going to be crossing 13 rivers in the UK on the tour (I'll leave that particular conundrum to those better versed in geography than I to ponder). Tickets for the tour are on sale from 10 am on Friday 18th May. A link to ticket sales, a full list of dates and a little more about Richard Thompson follows:
John Oates will visit the UK in October 2018 for a rare run of UK/Eire shows. The dates are in support of his recently released 'Arkansas' album which showed a different side of John Oates the singer and songwriter. John will be touring with members of The Good Road Band and these dates are a very rare opportunity to see John perform live outside of Hall & Oates especially here in the UK. More about John Oates and the tour follows:
Russell Dickerson returns to the UK in October for his biggest tour yet. With ‘Blue Tacoma’ from his recent ‘Yours’ album a top 5 single at country radio in the USA — an album that also made the top 5 of the Billboard album chart — things are looking very good indeed for Dickerson. The October dates include a London headline show at The Borderline as part of Country Music Week and a run of shows opening for Darius Rucker. More about Russell Dickerson, those tour dates and the video for ‘Blue Tacoma’ follows:
Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit have announced a UK headline tour for October 2018. Klara and Johanna Söderberg aka First Aid Kit will be joined by Watford's finest The Staves on the dates which are in support of their most recent album 'Ruins' which was released earlier this year to widespread acclaim and a top three UK chart position. Full tour dates and more about First Aid Kit follows:
French synthwave icon Carpenter Brut will be returning to the UK in October with his 'Leather Patrol' tour. Earlier this year Carpenter Brut released the 'Leather Teeth' album the soundtrack to the imaginary 80's horror film that told the story of Bret Halford (you see what he did there) aka Leather Teeth leader of Leather Patrol. If you have a love of 80's movie soundtracks and so bad they're great movies such as 'Trick Or Treat', 'Hard Rock Zombies' or 'Black Roses' then the new single 'Beware The Beast' from the album is an essential watch. So please read on for more about Carpenter Brut and the 'Leather Patrol' tour:
A true guitar legend, Duane Eddy will make a rare visit to the UK in October 2018 as he celebrates his 80th birthday year with shows in London, Glasgow and Manchester. Tickets for the shows are available from 9am on Friday June 8th. Duane Eddy's twangy guitar sound is one of the most recognisable and influential sounds in the history of rock music. More details about the shows including ticket links and a little more about Duane Eddy follows:
BluesFest 2018 at The O2 this October was already looking pretty impressive with the likes of John Fogerty, Steve Miller Band, Robert Plant, Robert Cray and Van Morrison already on the bill. The promoters have now added more impressive names with the always excellent Zac Brown Band bringing their individual brand of Southern/Country/Jam rock to the O2 with special guest Beth Hart. The festival takes place October 25-27th with artists performing in the main arena and at the Indigo venue of the O2. More about the acts, the festival and ticket details follow:
Canadian act The Sheepdogs will be visiting the UK in late October for a run of dates before that hit the European mainland. The rescheduled dates are in support of their recent ‘Changing Colours’ release and include London’s Borderline on November 5th. The quadruple Juno Award winning act have been compared to The Band, The Allman Brothers Band and The Flying Burrito Brothers, which gives you a good idea of where they’re at musically and ‘Changing Colours’ lives up to those comparisons. A full list of the tour dates and more about The Sheepdogs follows:
Blue Oyster Cult have announced a run of UK dates for February 2019 with special guests The Temperance Movement. The eight date tour starts in Norwich and includes a London show at Eventim Apollo which, coincidentally, was the venue when I first caught the band live on their 'Revolution By Night' tour in 1984. Tickets are on sale from 10am on Friday 27th July. A little more about BOC and those tour dates follows:
Eagles have announced a run of European dates as part of their 2019 world tour with the first show on May 26th in Antwerp and UK dates commencing June 23rd in London (Sheryl Crow will be special guest for the London date). Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit will be joined by Vince Gill and Deacon Frey for the tour. Tickets go on sale to the general public on October 5th 2018 at 9am. More info on the band including ticket links and the full list of UK dates follows:
