The RGM inbox September 2020

September 01, 2020 by David Vousden in singer-songwriter, Americana, Folk

September 1st, 2020 and RGM is six years old today. This year has been without a doubt the toughest yet here at RGM, which I’m sure will come as no surprise to anyone reading this little editorial as its been a tough year for everyone. Undaunted, if more than a little battered and bruised emotionally, we are still here looking to introduce you to more new and interesting music in a range of musical genres. With this in mind, the Inbox returns with tunes from both sides of the Atlantic as newcomer Lauren Moon and a returning Sam Brookes are joined by The Jorgensens reinventing a classic and Jake Allen doing his bit for our mental health through song.

Lauren Moon_ Artwork_1.jpg

Earlier this year London based singer-songwriter Lauren Moon released her debut single ‘It’s Easy To Stay Home’ which although bright and breezy in the delivery captured the problems that many folks experienced as they did indeed stay home. Lauren and her bandmate Peter Perrett Jr (son of The Only Ones singer) return with ‘What Goes Round (Comes Round)’ which displays another side of her character. Anchored by Perrett’s gorgeously warm bass playing, ‘What Goes Round (Comes Round)’ is darker, more sultry. Lauren’s vocal is smooth yet with a breathy earthiness that works rather well when coupled with a slew of Fleetwood Mac approved guitar lines and terrific widescreen production. The result is a bit of a gem which puts Lauren Moon firmly on my radar. Check out the single, I’m sure you’ll feel the same.

For our next artist, we cross the Atlantic to St. Paul, Minnesota where we find The Jorgensens with a new take on an old classic. Kurt and Brianna have put their spin on Billy Squire’s ‘In The Dark’ striping the tune back to its roots and rebuilding it from the ground up. The result is further enhanced by a video which reinterprets the lyrics in a way Billy Squier probably didn’t envisage back in the day. The vocal interplay and inventive instrumentation from the duo mark this out as a really cool take on a song few would have seen coming. The duo starting working together in 2014 and have been going from strength to strength ever since and ‘In The Dark’ is their first release as they embark on a new relationship with Dark Star Records.

Sam Brookes.jpg

We travel back to the UK (I really miss the days when such things were possible) to Bristol where singer-songwriter Sam Brookes has a new single ‘Sinking Boats’ from his upcoming ‘Black Feathers’ album due October 23rd via Go Slowly Records. Sam burst onto the scene in 2014 with his debut album receiving great reviews and comparisons to Jeff Buckley and Bon Iver. A lot has happened to Sam in the six years since but I’m pleased to report ‘Sinking Boats’ is a percussive marvel and Sam’s voice is a thing of beauty.

Jake Allen.jpg

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Jake Allen will release his 4th full-length album ‘Affirmation Day’ on October 2nd, 2020. The first single from the album ‘Rising Tide’ is available now. Jake is possibly best known for his impressive fingerstyle guitar dexterity, delivered with percussive intensity and clever use of looping, but there is more to Jake than guitar wizardry as the densely orchestrated progressive folk-pop of ‘Rising Tide’ demonstrates. Comparisons to Damien Rice and especially Duncan Sheik seem to hit the mark.

With the release of the "Rising Tide," Jake Allen is donating 20% of album pre-orders and any sales in his online merch store to the Live Blue Foundation, a group that is actively putting into practice the science behind the benefits water has on emotional wellness. #bluemind

“I write about the tension and anxiety that result from wearing blinders to what’s is broken in us globally and personally and I felt like I should do something about it beyond just writing about it.

Through a serendipitous chain of events I was led to the concept of “Blue Mind” and I became friends with the author of the book bearing the same title, Dr. Wallace J. Nichols.

The book and the concept are simple. Being around, on and in water has a healing effect on our minds and helps us re-center ourselves. Water is part of my life and I feel like we all inherently know that it is medicine for our bodies and mind, but often take for granted. Blue Mind breaks it down into a defined thing that we can put into practice.

In a year where anxiety and stress are reaching an all time high, we need these foundational reminders of how to rediscover our even keel.

Blue Mind is really a ground level solution and the Live Blue Foundation is putting it into action where it’s needed most”

Let's talk jazz
Jun 23, 2025

In the first of an occasional series, we’re going to talk jazz as we share a quartet of jazz recommendations that we feel will appeal to seasoned veterans of the genre and newer listeners on a voyage of discovery. As a genre, jazz seems impenetrable to many, but not unlike Americana (an obvious RGM favourite), jazz is a many-headed beast that rewards exploration. As I’ve said previously, I don’t claim to be an expert on the subject, but I do find much to enjoy. I’ll admit that, occasionally, I do get scared by oddly cacophonous time signatures, but that’s all part of the fun, or so I’m told. So let’s take a listen to a few examples of upcoming releases that highlight the range of the genre, including a new live release from a jazz legend and a trio that are a bit of a favourite here at Red Guitar Music despite their lack of a guitarist (yes, I have to admit a guitarist isn’t always required when the musicians are this good).

Tift Merritt announces 20th anniversary vinyl reissue of 'Tambourine' + UK dates
Jun 19, 2025

Acclaimed songwriter Tift Merriff will return to the UK this month for two shows, including an appearance at the prestigious Glastonbury festival as part of a European tour. The dates coincide with news of a 20th Anniversary vinyl reissue of ‘Tambourine’. This in itself is great news, but the news that seals the deal for long-time fans is the release of ‘Time and Patience’, a new album that charts the evolution of the record via previously unheard material, including a selection of demos recorded in the singer’s kitchen. Both albums will be released on August 29th 2025, on One Riot Records. More about Tift, the records and a demo recording of fan favourite ‘Good Hearted Man’ follow:

A classic song is a classic song for a reason. That being said, there is always room for reinterpretation. Sometimes an act will bash out a crowd-pleasing tune note for note, while others will strip down and reconstruct. Both options can be equally valid artistically, depending on the situation. Today, we present four artists who’ve revisited instantly recognisable tunes. The other plus point of a well-conceived cover is that it will, hopefully, inspire you, the listener. to check out their original material if you’re unfamiliar.

Judy Blank signs with Rounder Records Dinosaur single out now
Feb 3, 2025

Netherlands-born but now Nashville-based Judy Blank has signed with the influential Rounder Records label. A new digital multi-track single 'Lil’ Mood' will be released on March 14th to coincide with an appearance at SXSW. In the meantime, check out the environmentally conscious ‘Dinosaurs’ for a taste of Blank’s eclectic sound, which, on this occasion, mixes a dreamy 1960s cool vibe with a 1980s synth soundscape. Blank will also be hitting the road in the USA, her native country, and even has a couple of shows pencilled in for the UK. Full details and the video for ‘Dinosaurs’ follow:

When it comes to LP Box Sets there can’t be too many acts more suited to the format than Pentangle. The Folk supergroup released six albums in a mere four-year period from 1968-1972 and these are now collected, with a host of bonus material, on a very smart-looking 14 LP deluxe box set via Svart Records on 16th April 2025. Discovering folk music via the official UK Folk Albums Chart
Sep 4, 2024

Growing up, the idea of listening to folk music would have been an almost ludicrous one. As a teen, I was, like many of you, obsessed with rock/pop and, in my case, hard rock. I’d been raised in a house where Elvis and country music ruled the airwaves, so with a typical teenage disregard for my parents, I was always on the lookout for noisier sounds, provided there was still a tune to be heard, extreme metal was out. Folk was almost a four-letter word. Naturally, my tastes evolved over the years. I could not and would not, thankfully, shake Elvis (Mum had done a fine job of ingraining the King into my psyche) while I found my way back to more traditional country music via Americana, or alt-country as it was back then. This brings me to folk music, like Americana, a melting pot of widely differing sounds and styles. You might well be listening to folk music and not know it. So, it seems like a good time to peruse the August 2024 edition of the UK Folk Music Charts in search of some great music.

Silver Patron Saints, a star-studded tribute and benefit album for musician and songwriter Jesse Malin, is set for release 20.09.24 on 3xLP | digital via Glassnote Records. As a taster for the set Bleachers aka Jack Antonoff (Taylor Swift, Lana Del Ray, Kendrick Lamar, Lorde etc) recently released a cover of Jesse’s ‘Prisoners of Paradise’. Jesse suffered a rare spinal stroke in May 2023 that left him paralysed from the waist down. All proceeds for Silver Patron Saints will go to Malin’s Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. More about Jesse Malin, Silver Patron Saints and the impressive range of musicians involved in the record follows:

Status Quo - The Early Years 5CD Box Set (1966-69) due March 15th 2024
Feb 13, 2024

Status Quo broke through commercially in the 1970s, but this was no overnight success story. Long before the denim and the heads down boogie, there was a band formed in 1962 by school friends Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster, learning their craft for many years before they became the Quo we know. There would be many ups, downs and sartorial as well as musical variations into which ‘The Early Years’ a new 5CD set from BMG, takes a deep dive, including material from pre-Quo acts The Spectres and Traffic Jam as well as the first two albums credited to Status Quo with plentiful bonus tracks including BBC sessions. The full press release and track listing follows:
