Keb' Mo' announces new album 'Good To Be' for January 21st 2022 via Rounder Records

October 14, 2021 by David Vousden in Americana, Blues, Country, New Single, singer-songwriter, Soul

Guaranteed to brighten your day is ‘Good Strong Woman’ from Keb’ Mo’. The single featuring Darius Rucker is from his upcoming album ‘Good To Be’ and is one of three tracks from the album co-produced by Vince Gill. The album was written between Nashville and Compton merging country, blues, soul and geographical influences. Other guests on the album include Old Crow Medicine Show and Kristin Chenoweth. The video for ‘Good Strong Woman’ was released today (October 14th) and it’s full of positivity and good vibes. More about Keb’ Mo’ and the upcoming album follows:

Today, five-time GRAMMY winner Keb’ Mo’ announces his new album Good To Be, set for release on January 21st 2022 via Rounder Records. The announcement arrives with the official video for the first single “Good Strong Woman” featuring Darius Rucker. Written between Nashville and his childhood home in Compton, California, Good To Be is a celebration of roots and resilience, drawing on country, soul, and blues to forge a sound that transcends genre and geography. Good To Be is now available for pre-order.

“I cowrote this with two of Nashville’s best country writers, Jason Nix and Jason Gantt. It’s a song that I didn’t think I’d be recording, but it was just too much fun, and I had to give it a shot.  When Darius got involved, it went from fun to stun,” explains Kevin Moore, who is best known by his stage name Keb’ Mo’.

Good To Be was co-produced by Keb’ Mo’ alongside country music legend Vince Gill, who produced three of the album’s 13 tracks, and three-time GRAMMY winner Tom Hambridge (B.B. King, Buddy Guy). Darius Rucker, Kristin Chenoweth, and Old Crow Medicine Show all make guest appearances on the album.

Earlier this year, Keb’ Mo’ released “Sunny and Warm” and “The Medicine Man” (feat. Old Crow Medicine Show), both of which will appear on the forthcoming album. While some of the songs like “Quiet Moments” were written as far back as the early ’70s, others were penned just months ago in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced Keb’ off the road for more than a full year. Dividing his time between Nashville and Compton, where he recently purchased and renovated his late mother’s house, Keb’ often found himself reflecting on the idea of home, contemplating what it means to belong and what it takes to stay true to yourself.

“You can’t bring an attitude to Compton,” reflects Keb’. “You can’t pose. You can’t be anything but real when you’re walking down the same streets you used to ride your bike on as a kid. In a lot of ways, coming back there felt like it completed me.”

Last month, Keb’ Mo’ was the recipient of the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Performance Award, which was presented to him at the organization’s 20th annual Honors and Awards show in Nashville.

I’ll Take You There: Discovering the Sound of Alabama will premiere globally on YouTube at 3:00 p.m. CDT / 4:00 p.m. EDT / 8:00 p.m. GMT on March 12th. This new documentary explores the history and influence of the music of Alabama (home to FAME and Muscle Shoals) and the state’s critical role in the civil rights movement. Ike White - Changin' Times RSD 2026 Exclusive Ltd Vinyl Reissue
Mar 3, 2026

An album that has become a much sought-after slab of soul/funk since its release in 1976 will be reissued as a 50th Anniversary Limited Edition RSD Exclusive on Record Store Day, April 18th 2026. The album in question is Changin’ Times by Ike White. White was serving a prison sentence for murder when he was discovered by producer Jerry Goldstein, best known for his involvement with War (the band, not the event). Needless to say, the album was not without controversy, and on his release from prison in 1978, White promptly disappeared. Musically, ‘Changin’ Times’ is an impressive record from an artist with one hell of a backstory, now set for reissue with audio cut directly from the original analog tapes by legendary mastering engineer Bernie Grundman. More about Ike White and ‘Changin’ Times’ follows:

Alyssa Bonagura travels down America's Backroads June 5th
Feb 20, 2026

Currently (Feb/March 2026) on the road in the UK as special guest of Kezia Gill, Alyssa Bonagura will release a new album ‘America’s Backroads’ on June 5th via Lookout Mountain Records. The autobiographical first single from the record ‘Hippies & Gypsies’ is out today (February 20th), and it’s a terrific tune highlighting Alyssa’s delivery and fine storytelling. I’m definitely expecting great things from the album. With the likes of Bob Harris and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler singing her praises, the stars might well be aligning for Alyssa Bonagura. Charles Kelley announces One-Night-Only London show for March 5th
Jan 20, 2026

Charles Kelley will visit London on March 5th, 2026, for a one-off London show at The Tabernacle. The in-demand songwriter, and Grammy award winner, best known for being one-third of Lady A, released ‘Songs For A New Moon’ his second solo album last year which firmly embraced a love of 80’s pop often hinted at, for me anyway, in the best of his work with the multi-million selling Lady A. Seated fan pre-sale tickets go on sale this Tuesday, Jan 20 at 10 AM GMT and can be found here. C2C pre-sale begins at 10:00 a.m. GMT on Wednesday, January 21. General tickets will go on sale this Friday, January 23, at 10:00 a.m. GMT. ‘Songs’ is a cool record, full of great songs, so the London show should be something special.

Let's talk jazz
Jun 23, 2025

In the first of an occasional series, we’re going to talk jazz as we share a quartet of jazz recommendations that we feel will appeal to seasoned veterans of the genre and newer listeners on a voyage of discovery. As a genre, jazz seems impenetrable to many, but not unlike Americana (an obvious RGM favourite), jazz is a many-headed beast that rewards exploration. As I’ve said previously, I don’t claim to be an expert on the subject, but I do find much to enjoy. I’ll admit that, occasionally, I do get scared by oddly cacophonous time signatures, but that’s all part of the fun, or so I’m told. So let’s take a listen to a few examples of upcoming releases that highlight the range of the genre, including a new live release from a jazz legend and a trio that are a bit of a favourite here at Red Guitar Music despite their lack of a guitarist (yes, I have to admit a guitarist isn’t always required when the musicians are this good).

Tift Merritt announces 20th anniversary vinyl reissue of 'Tambourine' + UK dates
Jun 19, 2025

Acclaimed songwriter Tift Merriff will return to the UK this month for two shows, including an appearance at the prestigious Glastonbury festival as part of a European tour. The dates coincide with news of a 20th Anniversary vinyl reissue of ‘Tambourine’. This in itself is great news, but the news that seals the deal for long-time fans is the release of ‘Time and Patience’, a new album that charts the evolution of the record via previously unheard material, including a selection of demos recorded in the singer’s kitchen. Both albums will be released on August 29th 2025, on One Riot Records. More about Tift, the records and a demo recording of fan favourite ‘Good Hearted Man’ follow:

A classic song is a classic song for a reason. That being said, there is always room for reinterpretation. Sometimes an act will bash out a crowd-pleasing tune note for note, while others will strip down and reconstruct. Both options can be equally valid artistically, depending on the situation. Today, we present four artists who’ve revisited instantly recognisable tunes. The other plus point of a well-conceived cover is that it will, hopefully, inspire you, the listener. to check out their original material if you’re unfamiliar.

Judy Blank signs with Rounder Records Dinosaur single out now

Netherlands-born but now Nashville-based Judy Blank has signed with the influential Rounder Records label. A new digital multi-track single 'Lil’ Mood' will be released on March 14th to coincide with an appearance at SXSW. In the meantime, check out the environmentally conscious ‘Dinosaurs’ for a taste of Blank’s eclectic sound, which, on this occasion, mixes a dreamy 1960s cool vibe with a 1980s synth soundscape. Blank will also be hitting the road in the USA, her native country, and even has a couple of shows pencilled in for the UK. Full details and the video for ‘Dinosaurs’ follow:

When it comes to LP Box Sets there can’t be too many acts more suited to the format than Pentangle. The Folk supergroup released six albums in a mere four-year period from 1968-1972 and these are now collected, with a host of bonus material, on a very smart-looking 14 LP deluxe box set via Svart Records on 16th April 2025.
