Kate Ellis Spirals LP

Kate Ellis announces Limited Edition 'Spirals' LP with bonus track due March 3rd

February 23, 2023 by David Vousden in Acoustic, Americana, Country, New Single, News, Singer Songwriter, Tour Dates, Vinyl

Kate Ellis released her second album ‘Spirals’ in early 2022 to universal acclaim. A record blessed with lyrical depth that feels deeply personal but ultimately is universally accessible. You’d think ‘Spirals’ would be all melancholy moodiness, but Kate mixes things up, even finding room for a dalliance with county rock and a dash of country pop amongst the piano balladry and pedal steel textures. On March 3rd, ‘Spirals’ will receive a Limited Edition Numbered vinyl release with a bonus track from the album sessions ‘Hurt’, the Trent Reznor song immortalized by Johnny Cash. More about Kate Ellis, the album and an upcoming vinyl launch show at London’s Green Note follows:

A limited edition of 300 hand-numbered vinyls of Kate Ellis's critically acclaimed sophomore album 'Spirals’ will be released on March 3, 2023 on River Rose Records, one year after its original launch. The album, which showcases the Louisiana-born singer-songwriter's melancholic Americana/Folk style and fearless soul-searching, will be distributed in the UK and ten other EU territories by Continental Record Services.

VINYL LAUNCH SHOW - GREEN NOTE, LONDON - MON 27TH FEBRUARY

‘Spirals’ is the record that allowed Kate to take the whirlwind in her head and put it to song and has been streamed on online platforms over 700,000 times since release. The album received high praise from reviewers, with W21 Music saying that "Musically and lyrically this is sharp, brilliant, faultless songwriting that stops you in your tracks”, while Maverick Magazine gave it 8/10 and heralded Ellis as “A songwriter who is deeply in touch with her emotions and has a way of perfectly capturing them in her music.” Spirals’ was also named as Album of the Year by a number of independent radio DJs and listed among the Top 40 Americana Albums of the Year

“The physical properties of a vinyl record as an object have always been very important to me. My dad’s collection really influenced me musically growing up and shaped the music I love and write. I’ve got some cherished records of his and I love that they are old and were loved by him. A lot of people have asked me about ‘Spirals’ on vinyl so I’m thrilled that it’s now available”
— Kate Ellis

While recording ‘Hurt’ and the other songs on ‘Spirals’, Kate Ellis and John Reynolds connected strongly over a desire to capture the emotional truth in the music. “One of the things I love about John Reynolds’ production on ‘Hurt’ is how he really brings out the feeling of redemption”, Kate says. “The angelic, choral harmonies of Pauline Scanlon and the gorgeous, driving, layered cello arrangement by Caroline Dale create a feeling of looking up to the heavens for help, surrendering to this feeling of pain and in doing so finding a kind of solace.”

Kate adds: “‘Hurt’ is a pure, bare, elemental outpouring of human suffering so simply and beautifully conveyed. The melody works in complete harmony with the lyrics to bring the listener down to the song's base level of despair.” According to Kate the song fits perfectly as a bonus track on a record that is about finding a new understanding of ways to cope with the demons and dramas that can take over our minds. “In ‘Hurt’ there is a strength that comes out of this voice of despair, like someone who has reached rock bottom, and in doing so has found the strength to get through and possibly, with the last line, find another way to live.”

The music video for ‘Hurt’ is as beautiful and atmospheric as the recording and was made by Benny Trickett, who has worked with legends like Pink Floyd, Kings of Leon and Beyoncé, and Gabi Norland, who has filmed artists such as Kate Tempest, Suede and Dexy’s Midnight Runners. The video was shot in London’s magnificent Asylum Chapel, a Grade II listed building with a combination of crumbling beauty and ethereal grace, perfectly mirroring the song's theme of earthly decay and spiritual hope.

Let's talk jazz
Jun 23, 2025

In the first of an occasional series, we’re going to talk jazz as we share a quartet of jazz recommendations that we feel will appeal to seasoned veterans of the genre and newer listeners on a voyage of discovery. As a genre, jazz seems impenetrable to many, but not unlike Americana (an obvious RGM favourite), jazz is a many-headed beast that rewards exploration. As I’ve said previously, I don’t claim to be an expert on the subject, but I do find much to enjoy. I’ll admit that, occasionally, I do get scared by oddly cacophonous time signatures, but that’s all part of the fun, or so I’m told. So let’s take a listen to a few examples of upcoming releases that highlight the range of the genre, including a new live release from a jazz legend and a trio that are a bit of a favourite here at Red Guitar Music despite their lack of a guitarist (yes, I have to admit a guitarist isn’t always required when the musicians are this good).

Tift Merritt announces 20th anniversary vinyl reissue of 'Tambourine' + UK dates
Jun 19, 2025

Acclaimed songwriter Tift Merriff will return to the UK this month for two shows, including an appearance at the prestigious Glastonbury festival as part of a European tour. The dates coincide with news of a 20th Anniversary vinyl reissue of ‘Tambourine’. This in itself is great news, but the news that seals the deal for long-time fans is the release of ‘Time and Patience’, a new album that charts the evolution of the record via previously unheard material, including a selection of demos recorded in the singer’s kitchen. Both albums will be released on August 29th 2025, on One Riot Records. More about Tift, the records and a demo recording of fan favourite ‘Good Hearted Man’ follow:

A classic song is a classic song for a reason. That being said, there is always room for reinterpretation. Sometimes an act will bash out a crowd-pleasing tune note for note, while others will strip down and reconstruct. Both options can be equally valid artistically, depending on the situation. Today, we present four artists who’ve revisited instantly recognisable tunes. The other plus point of a well-conceived cover is that it will, hopefully, inspire you, the listener. to check out their original material if you’re unfamiliar.

When it comes to LP Box Sets there can’t be too many acts more suited to the format than Pentangle. The Folk supergroup released six albums in a mere four-year period from 1968-1972 and these are now collected, with a host of bonus material, on a very smart-looking 14 LP deluxe box set via Svart Records on 16th April 2025. Discovering folk music via the official UK Folk Albums Chart
Sep 4, 2024

Growing up, the idea of listening to folk music would have been an almost ludicrous one. As a teen, I was, like many of you, obsessed with rock/pop and, in my case, hard rock. I’d been raised in a house where Elvis and country music ruled the airwaves, so with a typical teenage disregard for my parents, I was always on the lookout for noisier sounds, provided there was still a tune to be heard, extreme metal was out. Folk was almost a four-letter word. Naturally, my tastes evolved over the years. I could not and would not, thankfully, shake Elvis (Mum had done a fine job of ingraining the King into my psyche) while I found my way back to more traditional country music via Americana, or alt-country as it was back then. This brings me to folk music, like Americana, a melting pot of widely differing sounds and styles. You might well be listening to folk music and not know it. So, it seems like a good time to peruse the August 2024 edition of the UK Folk Music Charts in search of some great music.
