The RGM Inbox - March 2023

March 03, 2023 by David Vousden in Singer Songwriter, Instrumental Rock, Alternative Rock, Psych, Prog Rock, Folk, Indie

Welcome to the latest edition of the RGM Inbox, where we delve into a selection of recent and upcoming musical delights that caught our attention. We’ve scoured the globe to discover new music from Germany, Norway, Australia and back home here in the UK.

German-based singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer M. Byrd has released the fourth single, ‘Outside Of Town’ from his upcoming debut album ‘The Seed’ due June 16th via Nettwerk. A tale of loss and uncertainly laced with hope told through a veil of shimmering guitars that builds to a crescendo, ‘Outside Of Town’ bodes well for the album release and builds on M Bryd’s run of impressive single releases (‘Flood’ especially). Fans of the likes of War On Drugs should find much to enjoy here.

And now for something a little on the mellow side. Norwegian trio Les Dunes will release their debut album of instrumental rock on March 24th via Germany’s Kapitaen Platte and on Norway’s Apollon Records - the latter covering the Nordic markets as well as the UK and the US. Les Dunes features Per Andreas Haftorsen (Guitars), Per Steinar Lie (bass) and drummer Morten Jackman who’ve a long list of credits including The Low Frequency in Stereo, Undergrünnen, Lumen Drones, Action & Tension and Helldorado, Check out the first single ‘Mellow Skies’ in anticipation of the next - equally good - single ‘Mayhem In Hm’ due March 3rd. ‘

“Nice mellow vibes with explosions in the sky feelings xx”

The Paper Kites

They say timing is everything. Unfortunately, mine seems very off as The Paper Kites have just completed a short tour of the UK, which I’ve obviously missed…Luckily we’ve new music on the way from the Australian quintet (currently expanded to an octet) in the shape of their “Roadhouse” project, which, on the strength of the first single ‘The Sweet Sound Of You’ could well be a little bit special. Sam Bentley’s understated delivery is supported by tasteful piano, wistful harmonica and a dash of pedal steel that leaves the listener desperate to hear more.

A pleasant surprise and a new name to me, UK-based singer-songwriter Marti West released his new single ‘Somebody New’  today, 3rd of March via Marti West Music. As bouncy a slice of indie folk pop as you’re likely to hear. Marti’s sweet voice is tailor-made for ethereal harmonies as he utilizes an acoustic bed and builds from there. The interplay between electric guitars and brass is unexpected and rather clever. ‘Somebody New’ is taken from an album Talking To Strangers, slated for release on the 28th of April. I’d recommend checking out his Soundcloud page to discover a string of lovely songs.

Fans of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys have been well served in recent years with a host of releases, including a string of box sets. This run continues with ‘On Tour 1999-2007’, an Exclusive release for Record Store Day 2026 that would make an ideal companion piece to the recently released ‘Live At The Roxy Theatre’ set. This vinyl-only release will be available worldwide for RSD and includes performances from Carnegie Hall (New York), Royal Festival Hall (London), UCLA Royce Hall (Los Angeles), CenterStaging (Burbank, CA), the Wiltern Theatre (Los Angeles), and Chicago. Musically, the LP takes a deep dive into both Brian’s solo catalogue and The Beach Boys, with the likes of ‘Desert Drive’ rubbing shoulders with mini-suite ‘Our Prayer / Gee / Heroes & Villains’ which could only have come from the mind of Brian Wilson. The press release, complete with full track details and Brian Wilson, Oglio Entertainment and Record Store Day 2026 links, follows:

I’ll Take You There: Discovering the Sound of Alabama will premiere globally on YouTube at 3:00 p.m. CDT / 4:00 p.m. EDT / 8:00 p.m. GMT on March 12th. This new documentary explores the history and influence of the music of Alabama (home to FAME and Muscle Shoals) and the state’s critical role in the civil rights movement. Interestingly, the documentary is a transatlantic affair, featuring UK artists Lady Nade, Lauren Housley, and Michele Stodart on a pilgrimage to the state that influenced their own musical journeys. Ike White - Changin' Times RSD 2026 Exclusive Ltd Vinyl Reissue
Mar 3, 2026

An album that has become a much sought-after slab of soul/funk since its release in 1976 will be reissued as a 50th Anniversary Limited Edition RSD Exclusive on Record Store Day, April 18th 2026. The album in question is Changin’ Times by Ike White. White was serving a prison sentence for murder when he was discovered by producer Jerry Goldstein, best known for his involvement with War (the band, not the event). Needless to say, the album was not without controversy, and on his release from prison in 1978, White promptly disappeared. Musically, ‘Changin’ Times’ is an impressive record from an artist with one hell of a backstory, now set for reissue with audio cut directly from the original analog tapes by legendary mastering engineer Bernie Grundman. More about Ike White and ‘Changin’ Times’ follows:

Alyssa Bonagura travels down America's Backroads June 5th
Feb 20, 2026

Currently (Feb/March 2026) on the road in the UK as special guest of Kezia Gill, Alyssa Bonagura will release a new album ‘America’s Backroads’ on June 5th via Lookout Mountain Records. The autobiographical first single from the record ‘Hippies & Gypsies’ is out today (February 20th), and it’s a terrific tune highlighting Alyssa’s delivery and fine storytelling. I’m definitely expecting great things from the album. With the likes of Bob Harris and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler singing her praises, the stars might well be aligning for Alyssa Bonagura. More about Alyssa, the album and tour info follow:
