Artist Showcase: Gabriella Hunzinger

July 14, 2023 by David Vousden in Acoustic, Alt-Folk, singer-songwriter, Video

In the first of an occasional series, Red Guitar Music shines a light on an artist at the beginning of their career. Although not a total newcomer, due to her work in The Paper Waits, Gabriella Hunzinger strikes out as a solo artist with debut single ‘Body Away'. The first offering from a slew of recently recorded material, ‘Body Away’ is a striking creation that feels cinematically widescreen yet, with its acoustic guitar and cello roots, has an earthbound intimacy in keeping with the aims of its creator. As an introduction to Gabriella Hunzinger, inspired at an early age by artists such as Tori Amos, Kate Bush and Beth Gibbons, 'Body Away' is a musical calling card sure to impress. Please read on to discover more about Gabriella Hunzinger and ‘Body Away’, released today, July 14th via Ameno Records.

Red Guitar Music presents Tara MacLean 'That's Me' Video Exclusive

May 23, 2023 by David Vousden in Acoustic, Folk, New Single, Premiere, singer-songwriter, Video, Exclusive, Americana

Tara MacLean wrote ‘That’s Me’ in 1994, aged just 21, amidst shadowy times and falling through a succession of harrowing trap doors – all described in her acclaimed memoir ‘Song of the Sparrow’. The memoir is accompanied by ‘Sparrow’ an album of new material and reimagined versions of older songs, including ‘That’s Me’. From a career point of view, ‘That’s Me’ would play an important role, as it was the first song Tara had placed in a film, but from a personal point of view, things are a little more complicated. I’d imagine it’s like looking at your younger self in a mirror and wondering what might have been... Red Guitar Music is very pleased to offer this exclusive presentation of the striking video for ‘That’s Me’ and details of Tara's upcoming UK tour dates:

RGM presents The Maple Leaf Roundup #28

February 27, 2023 by Rich Barnard in Acoustic, Alternative Rock, Americana, Singer Songwriter, Video

My dear, dear, neglected reader.  It’s been an entire year since I last brought you news of the finest Canadian sounds around; a lapse for which I can offer no worthy excuse.  There will no doubt have been truckloads of tunes that have passed us by as a result, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned about the musicians of Canada, it is that their riches flow ever in abundance.  Just for you, I’ve scooped a few prize catches from 2023’s already quickening stream.  These are songs I believe deserve to be held awhile in the light; to be marvelled at; to not go unsung into that digital ocean.  So, boil the kettle, read on and get ready to make some new Canadian acquaintances.

The RGM Inbox: January 2022

January 10, 2022 by David Vousden in Ambient, Electronica, Hard Rock, Metal, Video, Sludge, Alternative Rock, Experimental, Post-Rock

Welcome to 2022 at Red Guitar Music. Updates have been a little sketchy recently at RGM as real life and the demands of having a day job in retail and/or family stuff tend to get in the way a little during the season of goodwill to all men. Hopefully, as we ease into the new year, we’ll be able to push on, shining a light on more great music, which was the plan back in 2014 and remains the plan in 2022. Today’s selection features impressive new musical offerings from Norway (Pjusk), the USA (KYOTY and Young Mountain) and, from the UK, Gilmore Trail. Enjoy.

The Hard Place #8

June 17, 2021 by Rich Barnard in AOR, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Melodic Rock, News, Video

You have reached The Hard Place. A place where the hair is just a shade more voluminous. A place where the trousers are, on average, two belt holes tighter. A place wherein it is perfectly normal for guitars to begin spontaneously spewing fireworks. Or lightning. Or both. We bring you the choicest, freshest cuts of retro-metal on offer. And, in a scene where wrongness so often prevails, The Hard Place offers a distillation of all that is currently right with the world of melodic hard rock. Quite a lot of it is, as you might expect, from Sweden.

The RGM Inbox: Country Edition #2

April 01, 2021 by David Vousden in Americana, Country, Country Rock, News, Video

The first country edition of the RGM Inbox was really well received so we’re back with another collection of country artists to check out. This edition features a range of music from acts that are more than happy to embrace the past and keep things old school to artists firmly in the modern Nashville mainstream. Which style do you prefer?

The Hard Place #7

March 17, 2021 by Rich Barnard in AOR, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, News, Rock, Video, Melodic Rock

Ever since big-haired hard rock was criminalised in the spring of 1993, those with a medical dependency on the genre have found it increasingly difficult to know where to turn. Thankfully, for these broken and desperate souls there is finally a sanctuary. No longer must they endlessly search for misfiled contraband in the planet’s fourteen remaining record shops. No longer do they need to be sat in front of eBay, fruitlessly entering euphemistic search terms like “perm noise” in the hope that they might score a forbidden fix. No longer. These unfortunate creatures – perhaps you are one of them – now have a refuge and that refuge is The Hard Place. Welcome, friend. Here, finally, you are understood. Everything you are about to sample is pure rock of the highest quality. And, best of all, it’s all legal.

Morgan Wade gets 'Reckless' March 19th, 2021

February 10, 2021 by David Vousden in Americana, Country, News, singer-songwriter, Video

Virginia native Morgan Wade has been making waves recently via a string of excellent sessions on youtube with OurVinyl and SomerSessions that highlight a fantastic voice singing hard-hitting songs of failed relationships, addiction, mental health and just all-around finding your way in the world. Wade has hooked up with Sadler Vaden, long-time guitarist for Jason Isbell as well as an acclaimed solo artist, to produce and Paul Ebersold to engineer ‘Reckless’ her debut album set for release via Thirty Tigers on March 19th. Capturing the essence of an artist like Wade, who works so well in an acoustic setting belting out tunes with emotion and conviction, can be a difficult job but the initial signs are good as evidenced by ‘Wilder Days’ and Don’t Cry’. Please read on to learn a little more about Morgan Wade and hear tracks from the album.

RGM presents The Maple Leaf Roundup #20

February 08, 2021 by Rich Barnard in Acoustic, Classic Rock, Folk, News, Pop, Rock, singer-songwriter, Video, Alternative Rock

Okay Canada, go easy on me. I somehow find myself in February 2021 trying to pick five chunks of hot new music for this feature, having amassed a ruthlessly edited shortlist of around 35. How did this happen, Canada? I can only account for the disappearance of an entire January by weeping before a hand-drawn graph of an alarming home-learning curve. You’ve made me choose, Canada, and it’s been hard. Nevertheless, here I am again, your most loyal of servants, educating the RGM readership on the subject of your latest and loveliest musical works of wonder.

Welcome to another year at Red Guitar Music. In so many ways 2020 was a year we’d all like to forget while 2021 has, unfortunately, delivered more of the same thus far, but we remain hopeful for better things later this year. Luckily, there’s always good music to take our minds off the day to day drudgery of living with a pandemic and January has already unearthed a few small gems.

The Hard Place #5

We all knew this winter was going to be hard. But nobody could have foreseen just how hard. Here, at the never-beating, black granite heart of The Hard Place, we’d like to think we can make it just that little bit harder. Just for you. “How hard?” you ask, expectant and not a little apprehensive. And the answer is “None. None more hard.” Walk with us now, barefoot, through the broken-bottle-strewn wasteland of rock’s best new releases.

Kandle is licensed to kill on new 007 inspired single/video

November 18, 2020 by David Vousden in New Single, News, Pop, Video

Vancouver based singer-songwriter Kandle and London, UK producer Michael Rendall share a love of James Bond and those fantastically timeless theme songs that are such an integral part of the Bond experience. With an invite to actually record the theme song for a James Bond film about as likely as the latest film in the franchise getting released anytime soon they embarked on a journey to create their own, and the result is ‘Lock & Load’. They’ve also put together a video that perfectly captures the feel of an opening 007 credit sequence. Please read on to check out the video (essential for all James Bond 007 fans) while Kandle tells us a little more about the creative process.
